"Life Happens On The Sofa."
Today the couch is invariably linked to both domestic family life and television culture. "Life Happens On The Sofa." It is often positioned in relation to the television set in a family room and for napping. It has spawned social phenomena such as the couch potato, a person who spends a lot of time watching the television. The couch has also become the central prop for many TV sitcoms and soap operas. This symbiosis, through which the couch has shifted from the private to the public sphere, has been satirically depicted in popular culture, in television series such as "All in the Family" Married... with Children, The Simpsons, The Big Comfy Couch, Friends, The Royal Family and Beavis and Butt-head.
Sofa can be traced back to ancient Egypt of around 2000 BC, but true sofa was invented in the end of the 16th to the early 17th century. At that time, horse hair, bird feather, plant villi such as natural flexible materials were made as the filler, with the outside velvet, embroidery, or other fabrics masked, to form a soft sofa surface.
Most Designs Used Today Were Conceived Hundreds Of Years Ago By Some Of The Worlds Most Famous Architects And Designers Working For The Aristocracies And The Well To Do Of Their Period.
Many of these architects and designers are as well known as Leonardo da Vinci (renaissance architecture) or Michelangelo,s (baroque architecture) as well as more recently William Morris, John Ruskin (founders of the Arts and Crafts furniture movement in circa 1800 England) Gustave Stickley (founder of the American Arts and Crafts movement in America circa 1900.) Most Production Sofas Are Not Comfortable And Will Break Down If You Sit In The Same Spot Over And Over Again. Most production sofas are built for appearance only with little regard for structure, usually resulting in a swallow you effect and a break down in cushion structure if set in repeatedly in the same place. As the sofa breaks down you work harder to remove yourself. Not only is this type of sofa unattractive it is uncomfortable. Properly built sofas will stand the test of time and deliver comfort every time as well as durability.
Most Production Sofas Use Polished Under Belly Sub-straight Hides Or Faux Man Made Materials
using just enough sub standard leather to be able to call the material leather or a variety of leather sounding names. Most of the non touchable parts are faux materials such as Nagahide, Pleather ("plastic leather") slang term for synthetic leather, Vegan Leather, Leatherette, Kydex, Birkibuc, Lorica, or Ocean leather. This type of construction will never last past the limited warrantee.

Designer Leather Furniture
We only use the best Full Grain Leather available from American tanneries. Full-grain leather or top-grain refers to the upper section of a hide that previously contained the epidermis and hair. The hair and the epidermis have been removed from the hide/skin. Full-grain refers to hides that have not been sanded, buffed or snuffed (otherwise known as Corrected) in order to remove imperfections (or natural marks) on the surface of the hide, although is never perfect. The grain remains in its natural state which will allow the best fiber strength, resulting in greater durability.
The natural grain also has natural breathability, resulting in greater comfort for clothing. Rather than wearing out, it will develop a natural patina and change in its appearance over time with some cracking and splitting. The finest leather furniture and footwear are made from full-grain leather. For these reasons only the best hides are used in order to create full-grain or top-grain leather. Fine art high end fabric is available for all custom furniture. Order your designer furniture hand made custom for you at Scottsdale Art Factory - call 1-800-292-0008.
