French Renaissance Revival Curule Chair
Based on a piece of furniture that was first noted in ancient Egypt and was used by the Romans to show rank, this antique styled chair can bring a noble air to your home. As early as 1327BC and possibly earlier, the curule style stool was being used by Egyptian royalty and is documented in tomb paintings. In ancient Rome, a curule stool was used for the magistrates and Julius Caesar was permitted a curule chair everywhere by senate decree, except for the theater where his gilded chair was used. Originally a folding stool, the curule stool is known by its distinctive sets of curved "X" shaped legs and had a seat made from leather or a cushioned seat atop the legs. Curule stools were often greatly embellished with intricate carvings, and were not always made from wood; some were made from ivory or cast bronze. Arms and a back were not included on the original style and a person's standing in society or in a room often dictated who would be permitted to sit upon the stool and who would have to stand or sit on the floor.
The most famous curule seat is the Throne of Dagobert, who is considered to be the last powerful Merovingian king and who ruled in the 7th century. His chair is made of cast bronze and may have been gilded at one time; it also was originally built without a back or arms, but Holy Roman Emperor Charles II added those in the 9th century. Other kings and rulers used the Throne of Dagobert as well, including Napoleon Bonaparte. The Throne of Dagobert has survived the centuries and is now displayed in the National Library of France. This style has been reimagined and revamped from its origination in ancient Egypt, use in the Roman Empire, through the French Renaissance Revival movement, and all the way to the current day.
Choose the original curule stool style or this beautiful 19th century French Renaissance Revival style or any variation you find or dream up. Scottsdale Art Factory custom makes furniture just for you.
