All antlers offered by Scottsdale Art Factory are natural AA Grade, top quality and gathered from the Great North woods immediately after they are naturally shed. We obtain first antlers as soon as possible so they are completely intact and not left to rot or get eaten by rodents. We never use seconds, fake or faux antlers of any kind. We source from the great American Northwoods region because calcium deposits are abundant and result in higher quality, structurally sound antlers.
The Historical Origins of Antler Furnishings
Antlers have been used for centuries by many Native American tribes as tools, decoration, and weapons. Some creation myths in Mexico depict deers as the first parents of the human race and they are considered sacred animals that act as caretakers of the Earth. A Cherokee legend tells the story of how deer originally had no horns but won a pair as a prize for a race against a deceitful rabbit. After proving that the rabbit was cheating, the animals of the forest rewarded the deer with antlers. Every generation of deer since has proudly worn them atop their heads.
Antler furniture became popular in Europe during the 1800s when it was made almost exclusively for nobility to decorate country manors and hunting castles. It later became a lifestyle trend for middle-class Europeans looking for a unique aesthetic. Today, many historic collections of antler furniture exist including the one of Count Arco in his palace in Munich, Germany.
How Art Factory Antler Chandeliers Are Made
We start with natural antlers and preserve each individual colors. Since each one is unique in form and shape, we pick the best ones that will made your chandelier aesthetically pleasing and one-of-a-kind.
Using a 1/4" thick steel central wire enclosure attached to the steel main structure, we secure each antler end individually and add internal wiring. This allows for each light socket and wire to be replaced, if needed, with little effort. All of our lighting is hipot tested to the rigorous standards and guidelines of Underwriters Laboratories. Our lighting can carry the UL seal of approval and all seals are recognized by building code inspectors the world over.
Our beautiful patina finishes are hand applied using a special patented process where oxides are bonded into the metal at over 1000 degrees. This permanent finish beautifies with age. We never paint or faux finish any of our iron. To enhance the look of your antlers, all iron parts are well hidden using a variety of colors and hand applied iron oxide patinas.
Our Patented Hand Forged Hidden Iron Super Structure Keeps You Safe
We construct an internal frame of 3/8" to 1"diameter iron that is hand forged and hammered into shape. This iron frame strengthens the structure of the chandelier, concealing all wires inside boxes and serves as a mount for the chain (which can hold 1200 pounds). Our patented method connects the chain directly to your solid beam or ceiling application for a positive direct mount. The weight of your chandelier is channeled through the steel frame, taking any pressure off the antlers. Because of the structurally sound way we design our products, you can even use a remote to raise and lower your chandelier for service or maintenance.

Deer communicate in a variety of ways including sound, scent, and marking. All deer are capable of producing audible noises, unique to each animal. Fawns release a high pitched squeal, known as a bleat, while does also bleat and occasionally grunt. Grunting produces a low, guttural sound to attract the attention of any deer in the area. Both does and bucks snort to signal danger. Bucks are unique, however, in their grunt-snort-wheeze pattern that often shows aggression and hostility.
Antlered deer possess many glands that produce scents, some of which are so potent they can be detected by the humans. The three major glands are orbital, tarsal and metatarsal. Orbital glands are found on the head and scent is deposited by rubbing. The tarsal glands are found on the lower outside of each hind leg which leaves a trail on vegetation. And the metatarsal glands, found on the inside "knee" of each hind leg, are the most potent.
During the first year, pedicles (a stalklike structure connecting orange or other parts) appear on the young deer's forehead. The following year, the youngster sprouts straight shafts, and, in the third year, the first antler branch appears. As the deer matures, his antlers lengthen and, in most species, sprout additional branches. A deer’s age can actually be determined from the number of branches on his antlers, as the number increases with age.
