Soda Fountain Shops - History and Influence
The soda fountain shop was a popular place for teens and adults to gather and socialize. Introduced in 1903, the counter-service soda fountain was added to drugstores to attract a lunch crowd serving malts, milkshakes, and ice cream sodas along with light lunches and sandwiches. During the Prohibition years, family-friendly soda fountain shops replaced bars and became the new hangout spot for adults. They were found in ice cream parlors, drug stores, and stand alone soda shops. The local soda shops afforded American families the small luxury of dining out and socializing with their peers during the financial difficulties of the Great Depression era. In the 1950s the soda fountain shops became full-service restaurants serving burgers and sandwiches along with the classic fountain sodas and shakes. These diners became hot spots for teenagers and young adults to hang out and gossip, as displayed in sock-hop, pop culture movies and television shows such as Grease and Happy Days. From the early 1900s to the 1970s these classic soda fountain shops were a big part of American culture as popular spots to gather and socialize. With the advent of the drive-thru window in restaurants, soda dispensers became mechanized and the vintage soda fountain and soda jerks - the folks behind the bar who manned them - declined in popularity. Eventually self-service became the norm and we saw socializing decline along with the
vintage soda fountain machine.
