S&H Green Stamps - History
Antique sign for S&H Green Stamps, one of the first retail loyalty programs where customers earned Green Stamps based on dollars spent, and could redeem the collections for products in a catalog. Green Stamps were created by Sperry & Hutchinson and offered to US retailers in 1896. Supermarkets, gas stations, and department stores purchased the stamps from S&H and would award their shoppers these stamps in denominations of 1, 10, and 50 points which could be mounted in collector books. The S&H Green Stamps collector books were provided to store patrons free of charge and contained 24 pages at 50 points per page, for a total of 1200 points per Green Stamp collector book. Customs could exchange filled books for items in the Green Stamp catalog or store for premium items such as housewares, where each item was assessed a value base on the number of filled stamp books required to obtain the item. Popular from the 1930s until the late 1980s these S&H Green Stamps trading stamps were distributed as part of a rewards program. Several competitors of S&H Green Stamps were Gold Bell Gist Stamps, Triple S Stamps, Gold Bond Stamps, Blue Chip Stamps, Plaid Stamps, Eagle Stamps, and Top Value Stamps. The S and H Green Stamps reward program, founded by Thomas Sperry and Shelley Byron Hutchinson, had its greatest popularity in the mid-1960s selling three times as many stamps as the US Postal Service and their catalog was the largest publication in the United States. Several recession in the 1970s caused a decrease in sales of green stamps creating a downward spiral of the loyalty rewards program and Sperry and Hutchinson was sold in 1981 where at the time only about 100 stores were offering the green stamps rewards program.
