Craftsman Style Sofa Design
In the first quarter of the 20th century the British Arts and Crafts movement flourished in the United States. The American Arts & Crafts societies started in New York, Chicago, and California had gained ground after the inaugural American Arts and Crafts Exhibition held in 1897 in Boston. Notable designers of this style include Gustav Stickley and Charles Limbert, along with architects Frank Lloyd Wright and brothers Henry and Charles Greene. While the industrial revolution was turning the world upside down, these Arts & Crafts designers were catering to individual who desired the simpler things in life. The heart of the Arts and Crafts style delivers to the public honest construction, native materials, practicality, value and elegance.
West coast architects Greene and Greene were influenced by the Far East which is revealed in their use of horizontal lines, geometric shapes, and the synergistic energy between the their designer furnishing and the surrounding landscapes. One example is the Gamble House (see below) where they designed the textiles, lighting and furniture for the Pasadena home.

Custom Sofa - Gamble House - Historical Origin and Design Inspiration
The Gamble House, also known as David B. Gamble House, (constructed 1908 - 1909) is a National Historic Landmark and museum in Pasadena, California, USA. It was designed by the architectural firm Greene and Greene, brothers Charles Sumner Greene and Henry Mather Greene, as a home for David B. Gamble of the Procter & Gamble company.
Originally intended as a winter residence for David and Mary Gamble, the three-story Gamble House is a residential ark commonly described as America's Arts and Crafts masterpiece, whose style shows influence from traditional Japanese aesthetics and a certain California spaciousness born of available land and a permissive climate. Arts-and-Crafts architecture was focused on the use of natural materials, attention to detail, aesthetics, and craftsmanship.
Rooms in the Gamble House were built using multiple kinds of wood; the teak, maple, oak, Port Orford Cedar, and mahogany surfaces are placed in sequences to bring out contrasts of color, tone and grain. Inlay in the custom furniture designed by the architects matches inlay in the tile mantle surrounds, and the interlocking joinery on the main staircase was left exposed. One of the wooden panels in the entry hall is actually a concealed door leading to the kitchen, and another panel opens to a clothes closet. The Greenes used an experienced team of local contractors who had worked together for them in Pasadena on a several previous homes, including the Hall brothers and Marbella brothers who are responsible for the high quality of the woodworking in the house and its furniture.
The Gamble House in Pasadena, California, is an outstanding example of American Arts and Crafts style architecture. The house and furnishings were designed by Charles and Henry Greene in 1908 for David and Mary Gamble of the Procter and Gamble Company. The house, a National Historic Landmark, is owned by the City of Pasadena and operated by the University of Southern California.
More Custom Furniture Product Information
We only use the best Full Grain Leather available from American tanneries. Full-grain leather or top-grain refers to the upper section of a hide that previously contained the epidermis and hair. The hair and the epidermis have been removed from the hide/skin. Full-grain refers to hides that have not been sanded, buffed or snuffed (otherwise known as Corrected) in order to remove imperfections (or natural marks) on the surface of the hide, although is never perfect. The grain remains in its natural state which will allow the best fiber strength, resulting in greater durability.
The natural grain also has natural breathability, resulting in greater comfort for clothing. Rather than wearing out, it will develop a natural patina and change in its appearance over time with some cracking and splitting. The finest leather furniture and footwear are made from full-grain leather. For these reasons only the best hides are used in order to create full-grain or top-grain leather. Fine art high end fabric is available for all custom furniture. Order your designer furniture hand made custom for you at Scottsdale Art Factory - call 1-800-292-0008.
