The USS Mispillion was commissioned in December of 1945, received a jumboization conversion in 1965-66, and was in the service of the United States Navy in various capacities until 1994, working mainly in the Pacific Ocean. The castle door was inspired by Kamyanets-Podilskyi Castle in Ukraine. Built in the 14th century, this castle faced hundreds of attacks from various invaders because of its strategic location but was only taken twice: once in 1393 due to internal discord, and again in 1672 when the invading Turks outnumbered the garrison 60 to 1. In 1793 the castle was turned over to the Russian Empire and was still considered one of the strongest fortresses even though it had been converted to a prison years before. Today the fortress still stands over the town of Kamyanets and both the town and the fortress display well preserved examples of architecture from the 13th through the 17th century.
The door itself is a 4" thick castle style door with decorative diamond clavos and narrow sidelights with 1" thermal glass. Using a bronze working portal window with modern thermal glass, instead of the more traditional speakeasy, creates a artistic nautical theme. To continue the nautical theme, a wrought iron mooring cleat door pull has been added as well. The USS Mispillion (AO-105) was an Ashtabula-class oiler that served in the U.S. Navy from 1945 to 1974. She was then transferred to the Military Sealift Command to continue service as the United States Naval Ship USNS Mispillion (T-AO-105), in which capacity she served until 1994.
The USS Mispillion was contracted by the Maritime Commission on February 14, 1945 with Sun Shipbuilding and Drydock Company in Chester, Pennsylvania. She was launched on August 10, 1945, sponsored by Mrs. C. E. Feddeman, acquired by the United States Navy from the Maritime Commission on November 30, 1945, and commissioned on December 29, 1945 with Commander R. E. Wingler in command.
The USS Mispillion joined Service Force, Pacific, on April 6, 1946. An oiler like the USS Mispillion was a supply ship; mainly performing refueling duties, but occasionally distributing food, supplies, and mail as well. Between 1946 and 1950, she alternated on station tanker duty between Tsingtao, China; Shanghai, China; Subic Bay, Philippines; and Eniwetok, with shuttle runs between the Arabian oil port, Bahrain, and various ports in Japan, China, the Philippines, the Marshall Islands, and the Mariana Islands. As a station tanker at Eniwetok in 1948, she took part in Operation Sandstone, an atomic bomb test. In 1949 she performed cold-weather operations off Alaska.
From 1950 through 1953, the USS Mispillion participated in the Korean War campaigns and earned eight battle stars. From 1967 through 1972, the ship participated in the Vietnam War campaigns and earned ten campaign stars.
Disposal - The USS Mispillion was sold for scrapping in early December 2011 and in early January 2012 was moved to Mare Island Naval Shipyard in Vallejo, California, where she was placed in drydock to be prepared for her last voyage to the scrapyard in Brownsville, Texas. She began her voyage to Brownsville on January 27, 2012, and transited the Panama Canal from the Pacific Ocean to the Caribbean Sea February 21-22, 2012. On March 4, 2012, she arrived at ESCO Marine in Brownsville to be scrapped. She was 67 years old, had the longest life overall and longest working life of any Ashtabula-class oiler, and was the last World War II-built oiler in existence. (Source: wikipedia.org)
