Chandelier Hand Forged In Original Craft Solid Wrought Iron

The medieval Castle household was, like modern households, the center of family life for all classes of European society. Yet in contrast to the household of today, it consisted of many more individuals than the nuclear family. From the household of the king to the humblest peasant dwelling, more or less distant relatives and varying numbers of servants and dependents would cohabit with the master of the house and his immediate family. The structure of the medieval household was largely dissolved by the advent of privacy in early modern Europe.

The need for light was a huge aspect of this lifestyle as it is today. With no electricity invented yet, our predecessors had to be inventive and possess great skills such as woodworking and blacksmithing to make candle holders, lanterns, or chandeliers that would be able to hold a live flame for light and not burn the buildings down.

Many style variations were spread over the entire continent and over a time span of about 1000 years. Yet it is still possible to speak of a classical model of the medieval household and its lighting solutions, particularly as it evolved in Carolingian France and from there spread over great parts of Europe.

The aristocratic household also had many needs for light. Neither the Greek nor the Latin languages have a word corresponding to the modern-day "family". In Latin, family must be translated to "household" rather than "family". The aristocratic household of ancient Rome was similar to that of medieval Europe in that it consisted of a number of clients or dependents in addition to the paterfamilias, his wife and children, who would attend upon him, counsel him and receive rewards.

Aristocratic households allowed for more elaborate lighting solutions to be created such as hand forged, ornate, wrought iron chandeliers. Today we at SAF still produce these designs in the same hand and materials however most are now redesigned for electric use by our American master craftsmen.
