Inspired by Hatley Castle
Hatley Castle was built in 1908 in Victoria, Vancouver Island, British Columbia by James Dunsmuir while he was the lieutenant governor. In 1939, the entire estate, including the castle, was sold to the government of Canada. In 1995, the Hatley Park estate was designated a National Historic Site of Canada. The castle was built in the Scottish Baronial style, which had a revival in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Inside the castle, wood is featured prominently in the decor, often in wide panels, and often as the backdrop for hunting trophies, as James retired in 1910 and enjoyed hunting and fishing until his death in 1920.
Though not found on Vancouver Island, the moose has been an important part of the lives of those who choose to settle in British Columbia from early times. The First Nations used their hides for clothes and shelter, their bones and antlers to make tools and other implements, and their meat was used to sustain the people. The early explorers were also dependant on moose for food and trade. In the current day, moose are one of the most important game species in British Columbia, bringing in revenue from hunting and meat for locals and visitors. This door is a celebration of things that make British Columbia unique.
