Master Blacksmith Forged Fine Art Fireplace Screen With Wrought Iron Ivy Leafs
Fireplaces were originally the only source of heat and cooking fire in the home, placed centrally in the home with a smoke hole above. As history moved on, we moved the fireplace as well to the ends of the home, though it was still used to cook so it was much wider than a fireplace today. In the early years of the United States, more changes were made to the design. Some Englishmen would build their two story homes with a central chimney and have fireplaces in the center of the home on each floor, keeping the house much warmer through the winter. Around 1795, Sir Benjamin Thompson created the Rumford fireplace, making the fireplace taller and shallower while increasing the amount of heat that would be generated into the room. At that point, many homes had separate kitchens that would have the larger style fireplaces to be used for cooking so the fireplaces in the rest of the home were simply for light and heat.
The 1950's brought central heating into the world and that began the decline of the practical uses for the fireplace. Separate stoves had been around for a while, so fireplaces were no longer generally relied upon for cooking by this time. As fireplaces became more of a decor feature and less a necessity, the designs became more creative. As the designs expanded, the need for custom fireplace screens became greater. This is where Scottsdale Art Factory excels. All we do is custom work, such as this wrought iron ivy covered fireplace screen. A patina finish is used to create the vibrant green of the leaves and that high heat finish makes the color safe from fading or wear from the heat of the fireplace. We can make screens in any size or shape, as you can see here, so give us a call to add a custom touch to your fireplace.
