Historical Origin And Design Inspiration

Acer is a genus of trees or shrubs commonly known as Maple. Maples are variously classified in a family of their own, the Aceraceae, or (together with the Hippocastanaceae) included in the family Sapindaceae. Modern classifications, including the Angiosperm Phylogeny Group classification, favour inclusion in Sapindaceae. There are approximately 125 species, most of which are native to Asia, but several species also occur in Europe, northern Africa, and North America. The word Acer is derived from a Latin word meaning "sharp" (referring to the characteristic points on the leaves) and was first applied to the genus by the French botanist Joseph Pitton de Tournefort in 1700. The type species of the genus is Acer pseudoplatanus (Sycamore Maple). Since April 25, 1996, the maple tree has been the national arboreal emblem of Canada.

Acer saccharum (Sugar Maple) Maples are mostly trees growing to 10-45 meters (30-145 ft) in height. Others are shrubs less than 10 metres tall with a number of small trunks originating at ground level. Most species are deciduous, but a few in southern Asia and the Mediterranean region are evergreen. Most are shade-tolerant when young, and are often late-successional in ecology; many of the root systems are typically dense and fibrous. A few species, notably Acer cappadocicum, frequently produce root sprouts, which can develop into clonal colonies.

Acer circinatum (Vine Maple) leaves showing the palmate veining typical of most species Maples are distinguished by opposite leaf arrangement. The leaves in most species are palmate veined and lobed, with 3-9 (rarely to 13) veins each leading to a lobe, one of which is central or apical. A small number of species differ in having palmate compound, pinnate compound, pinnate veined or unlobed leaves. Several species, including Acer griseum (Paperbark Maple),

Acer mandshuricum (Manchurian Maple), Acer maximowiczianum (Nikko Maple), and Acer triflorum (Three-flowered Maple), have trifoliate leaves. One species, Acer negundo (Box-elder), has pinnately compound leaves that may be simply trifoliate or may have five, seven, or rarely nine leaflets. A few, such as Acer laevigatum and Acer carpinifolium (Hornbeam Maple), have pinnately-veined simple leaves.

Hatley Castle is located in Colwood, British Columbia in Greater Victoria. Prior to European settlement, the area was used by the Coast Salish inhabitants as a source for food (berries and camas bulbs) and clothing (cedar bark). Settlers farmed this site until the early 1900s, when it was transformed into an elegant Edwardian estate.

In 1906, B.C.'s Lieutenant Governor, James Dunsmuir who was of Scottish ancestry, purchased the property and commissioned renowned Canadian architect Samuel Maclure to build a 40-room home in the Scottish baronial style, a Gothic revival style popular in the Edwardian period.

Royal residence At the outbreak of World War II, plans were made for King George VI, his wife Queen Elizabeth, and their two daughters, Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret, to reside in Canada. Hatley Castle was purchased by the federal government in 1940 for use as the King's royal palace, however, it was decided that having the Royal Family leave the UK at a time of war would be too big a blow to morale, and the family stayed in London.

As Shown: Structural Jamb, 97 1/2"T X 47 1/2"W X 3"Thick. Solid cedar 3" thick structural jamb with 1" thick rabbeted door stop. These jambs are ideal for conventional wood frame homes, masonry construction as well as for log homes or post and beam construction. This is because all SAF jambs are structurally built, and therefore allow the logs or beams to shrink and contract while the jamb stays straight and plumb. When You Order Pre- Hung All Door Jambs Include A Rabbeted Stop: This 1" thick door stop is a permanent part of the structural jamb. It is created by cutting a dado cut into the jamb, to receive and seal the door in a closed position. This method insures a perfect seal every time. Must Have - Adjustable Tension, Roller Style Door Latch: This ensures that your door will not open in windy conditions even when the lock is not set. The roller pressure to strike plate can be adjusted to allow the push and pull resistance to be to your personal choice. Depending upon the size, your door unit may require more than one of these latches. This style of latch removes the need for leavers, knobs, and thumb push hardware that usually need early replacing due to use mechanism failure.

Lock Choice #1: Heavy Duty Dead Bolt: This special dead bolt lock is built for our 3" to 7" thick doors. It is high strength tungsten steel and is almost impossible to breech allowing for the best security available. You may order single cylinder (thumb turn interior) or double cylinder (keyed both sides). This lock is also suitable for most commercial applications.

Lock Choice #2: Mortise Lock - Extra Heavy Duty: This special heavy duty mortise lock is produced by one of the worlds top lock manufacturers specially for our extra thick solid wood doors. This style of lock requires a large mortised pocket to allow for the steel lock mechanism to fit inside the door edge. Also the mounting plates and locking bolt are larger than that of a standard dead bolt. This type of lock allows for additional strength and security. It is high strength tungsten steel and is almost impossible to breech allowing for the best security available. You may order single cylinder (thumb turn interior) or double cylinder (keyed both sides).

Sweep Choice #1: Self Sealing Mechanical Under Door Sweep: This sweep is installed in the bottom of our 3"-7" thick door, it automatically raises and lowers as you open and close the door thus ensuring a perfect seal to your threshold every time. This sweep includes adjustable pressure turn that you may adjust to ensure a precise seal every time. As a side benefit, this type of sweep retracts into the bottom of the door as it opens to clear your interior entrance rug or flooring.

Sweep Choice #2: Face Mount Drag And Squeeze Sweep: This sweep is installed on the face of your door and requires extra force to open and close your door. It has been our experience this style sweep does not insure a perfect seal over time.

Threshold Choice: Adjustable Heavy Duty Crush Proof Threshold: This adjustable saddle threshold allows for a perfect seal when you close your door keeping the weather elements and creatures out. ADA compliant and commercial thresholds available.

Double Doors Require Stationary Door Slide Locks: The stationary door is required to be locked in order to allow the motion door to latch and lock. The strength of these slide locks are important to your security. Most leaver style mortis pins are weak and require very little force to break open. The solution is surface mounted solid steel slide bolts or drop bars.

Slide Bolt Choice #1: Surface Mounted Decorative Stationary Slide Bolts: Hand forged steel stationary slide bolts to secure your stationary door are built artistically to match your handles or design. This option is your most secure choice.

Mortis Pin Choice #2: Flush Mounted Leaver Mortis Pins: These pins are mortised into your stationary door to hold it in a fixed position. It has been our experience that this type of pin provides a weak point in double doors and is not the most secure.
