Biedermeier fruitwood bench with horsehair bench c1820. The cushion on this period sofa was recently redone with horsehair to match the original. Purchase 15 to 20 years ago from Karl Kemp in New York City. Measures 64 inches wide by 19 and three quarter inches deep and 20 inches to the top of the seat. Very good condition.

Pair of Continental rams head upholstered Flemish walnut armchairs, mid to late 19thc. Each chair measures 47 inches to the top of their backs, 23 inches wide, 26 inches deep, 21 inches to the top of their seats and 26 inches to the top of the arms. Subtle, yet impressive details adorn this rare and important George II mahogany chest-on-chest. The upper portion is graced with intricate key pattern molding and reeded, canted corners, while the bottom portion features a retracting writing surface. Drawers exhibit outstanding craftsmanship in their decoration and construction. On the exterior, they are graced with beautifully-cast brass pulls and lock covers, and feature inlaid parquetry banding. Inside, the drawers display the unique rays of the original quarter-sawn wood, which create a stronger structure, much less likely to bow, warp, or twist. The chest on chest was introduced early in the 18th century. Also known as the tallboy, it served as the wardrobe of the 18th century. Tallboys eventually gave place to the modern type of wardrobe, which, with its sliding doors, was found to give easier and more convenient access than the exceedingly tall chest. The topmost drawers of the tallboy could only be reached by the use of bed steps, and the disappearance of high beds and the consequent disuse of steps exercised a certain influence in displacing a characteristic piece of furniture, which was popular for at least a century. The early examples are walnut, but by far the largest portion of the many that have survived are mahogany, this being the wood most frequently employed in the 18th century for the construction of furniture, especially the more massive pieces.

An exceptionally rare mahogany half-tester bed boasting superior craftsmanship and detail. Characteristic of the great New Orleans cabinet maker Prudent Mallard, this bed is embellished with the Classical and Rococo revival styles that have become synonymous with period Southern decor. A bed of such remarkable size and luxury, reminiscent of the Antebellum era, served as the ultimate status symbol and was among the most prized of possessions. Most of the known furnishings from this period are tucked away in museums or held by a few families of long Southern lineage and are very desirable, especially those of such commanding size and grandeur.

In the thirteenth century, canopy or tester beds were first introduced to high society as an alternative style bed that allowed for greater seclusion at night. The first tester beds were made with suspended cords attached to overhead beams on which curtains hung. Tester beds quickly developed into bedchambers, used to provide privacy for sick persons. By the fifteenth century, canopy beds developed into palatially sized pieces of furniture. During the reign of William and Mary, the bedsteads became very tall, although they were less wide, in keeping with their loftier rooms. Eventually, tester beds were crafted in more stylized designs, which led furniture makers to consider both functionality and aesthetic value when creating these masterpieces. The ultimate romantic concept soon became the canopy or Tester with sumptuous drapes.

An exceptional American Rococo Revival tester bed, attributed to Charles Lee and sold by New Orleans cabinetmaker Prudent Mallard. The four-poster bedstead is crafted of rosewood with superb carving, exceptional tapered cluster columns supporting a painted and stenciled canvas canopy, and a scrolled ogee headboard with an applied carved cartouche. Rosewood beds by Prudent Mallard are among the most prized furnishings of the period, and among the hardest to find. A man linked with Mallard was Charles Lee, believed to be a freed slave living in New England. Regionally known as a "maker of bedsteads for the Southern market,"� Lee was a prolific craftsman whose work includes a magnificent matching mahogany canopy bed and armoire at Felix Poch�"�s plantation on River Road in Convent, Louisiana. Believed to be the maker of this incredible bed, Lee"�s work also displays the hallmarks associated with the great Prudent Mallard, a master of creating palatial furnishings without sacrificing grace and elegance.

Prudent Mallard was born in Sèvres, France, in 1809 and immigrated to America in 1829. He settled in New York but soon found the weather unsuitable for his asthmatic condition. He travelled by steamship to New Orleans, where he found the warm and steamy climate and the burgeoning economy most beneficial to his health and wealth. Mallard set up shop on Royal Street, the city's most prestigious avenue, and before long he was catering to the needs of a very wealthy clientele. As his success grew, Mallard acquired his own ships to carry cotton to Europe where they in turn loaded their hulls with luxurious furnishings and objects to bring back to his American clients. These same ships also made trips to the Caribbean, where Mallard purchased choice rosewood and mahogany to create his own masterful furnishings. By the 1840s and 1850s, the New Orleans economy was booming and French furniture was all the rage. Prudent Mallard"�s extraordinary success was fuelled by his clients' insatiable appetite for his spectacular and monumental furnishings.

The Civil War, however, proved disastrous for New Orleans and the South, and many of the opulent homes that dotted the country landscape were burned to the ground, reducing the magnificent furnishings inside to ashes. Smaller treasures were often spared, but many of the massive beautiful beds such as this perished. Today, few of these wonderful examples of Southern rococo style remain and many have been altered to fit modern homes.

This magnificent rosewood armoire was made for and owned by Empress Eugenie, wife of Emperor Napoleon III. The armoire bears the hallmarks of resplendent furnishings made specifically for the French Royal House, including the crossed "L"� on the doors representing Louis XIV and his passion for lavish interiors. An exceptional example of craftsmanship and design, the depth of hand-carving imparted on this armoire is exquisite and its size is monumental. Fine rosewood furnishings are some of the most sought after on the market. Coupled with royal provenance, this armoire is superb.

This exceptional Louis XV-period walnut armoire is an outstanding piece of French R�gence craftsmanship. Monumental in size, the double-doors and sides of this armoire display an elegant "bombay" shape, and are adorned with intricate carving of the highest degree of artistry. The original double strike lock and steel hinges add to this piece's beauty and importance. Original steel hardware is especially difficult to find in a period piece such as this, as the metal was frequently stripped to make armaments until World War I. The R�gence style revolutionized traditional forms and decorations to offer something truly new. Abandoning strict architectural styles, craftsmen combined comfort with beauty and function in round, curving designs that emulated the human form. Taking its name from the regency of Phillippe d'Orleans, who ruled France during the minority of Louis XV, R�gence furniture is a favorite of antique lovers and collectors. Its sumptuous forms reflect the rejection of the rigidity of the Louis XIV era. Instead, the first signs of the Rococo period, with its asymmetry and relaxed luxury, begin to emerge. To find such a large piece from this period, in such spectacular, original condition, is extremely rare.

A handsome and grand scale continental early 19th century Neo-Classical st. crouch mahogany and white Carrara marble, freestanding console. The console is raised by an arbalest shaped bottom tier with two impressive "�S"� scrolled carved swan supports and large carved acanthus leaves. At the back is a moulded panel with a carved reeded baseboard. The moulded frieze supports the original marble top with a moulded border.

A very attractive and elegant 19th century Regency st. mahogany dessert console. Raised by two turned legs and two straight back supports, joined by two tiers. Above is a central drawer below the moulded serving service. On each side is an impressive "�S"� scroll carved support below the top shelf decorated by a ¾ raised border. High quality mahogany throughout.

A handsome and high quality medium scale French Louis XVI st. 19th century circa. 1870 mouchete mahogany and ormolu mounted buffet. The buffet is raised by tapered fluted legs ending with sabots below two central interlocking doors with a shelf inside. On each curved side is a bottom mahogany tier below a 'Vert de Maurin' marble tier decorated by a pierced ormolu gallery. A central drawer and a drawer on each side with ormolu handles and keyhole escutcheon. Above lays its original marble top.
