A Mantel to Display Your Most Valued Treasures and Photographs
Fireplace mantels have been around in one form or another since the 18th century. Mantels soon became synonymous with the high class as furniture evolved into a status symbol and became a source of comfort and design within European homes. Besides providing heat during a time before electricity, the warm glow of a fire provided emotional and physical comfort and created a central gathering place for guests.
Handmade from 100% Solid, Real Wood
Our hand carved wood fireplace mantel is done in french Rococo style, which dominated during the 18th century just as fireplaces were evolving. Named for its use of stone (rocaille) and shell (coquilles) elements, Rococo emphasized natural motifs with whimsical curves and patterns. The movement sought to create decorations that would make an entire room, instead of just accents, a work of art using mirrors, furniture, and sculptures.

The middle of our fireplace mantel features an intricately carved seashell. Nature served as inspiration for Rococo style, so the seashell (designed from the ribbed shell of the mollusk) was an obvious choice due to its beautiful form and historical significance. Primitive civilizations once used shells as a form of currency and their designs can be found on drinking vessels and vases from early cultures in central and south america. For the Greeks and Romans, the shell was a symbol of fertility, associated with the goddess Aphrodite/Venus, and featured in Botticelli’s famous painting, “Birth of Venus.”
Your french Rococo wood mantle is rich with design history and will create an inviting, intimate atmosphere where you can relax and enjoy the warm glow.
