The Corvette is an icon in American automobile history having been in production for over 60 years. Named after a naval escort ship class, it was originally designed as a concept car for the 1953 New York Auto Show but it was such a big hit that it entered production in June of that year. It was GM's first foray into the sports car category. In 1956, notable improvements were made including only being offered with a V8 engine and offering factory installed removable hard tops. In 2004, the Corvette was the first to use a painted carbon fiber panel in a production vehicle in North America.
