S.A.F. Traces Its Roots To The Marbella Family In Southern Italy.

Master furniture makers for the Italian Aristocracy for over three hundred years. Renowned throughout Europe in their day, the Marbella family is best known for their handmade quality works in Marble, Fine Woods and Hand Forged Metals.

Marbella Brothers Begin New lives In Arizona Territory As Cowboys.

In 1895, the brothers Joseph and Nicholas Marbella ventured away from family tradition. They were drawn by stories of the American West, a land for the taking, a vast untapped wealth of gold, and the rugged life of the American cowboy. Inspired by the opportunity and excitement this new land promised, the two brothers set out from their homeland on a journey to acquire the American dream.

After traveling by ship to Ellis Island, they began their quest across the country - eventually settling in the Arizona territory. The two soon acquired their land and started down the road to begin their new lives as cowboys. Learning very quickly that they were not cut out for the business of being cowboys and needing a way to make a living, they found themselves falling back on a family tradition, furniture making. Joseph not satisfied with the desert living moved his large family and ventured further in to California. Eventually acquiring land in Southern California that reminded him of his home land. He began growing produce, invested in a grocery store and filling station and worked full time in Pasadena for the construction company building for the Greene & Green Architects. Now famous for the ultimate cottages in Pasadena california and the Gamble House now open to the public as a Museum dedicated to fine American craftsmanship.

Joseph understood that old world Italian, European and Victorian styles would not be practical in the new territory of California for the time. While working on projects for Greene And Greene in California and Nicholas in the Arizona territory working for a company building for Frank Lloyd Wright. They were able to have a close up hands on look and participate in the fledgling American Arts and Crafts movement. Since these now famous Architects were influenced by individuals such as Ruskin and Morris in England and Hoffman in Scotland and Gustav Stickley in New York. This allowed them to be on the cutting edge of design in their day.

Inspired while working in the shadows of the likes of these future great men who would later become known as the founders of the American Arts and Crafts Movement in America. Soon venturing out on their own, they decided to create an entirely original, truly American style as well as keep in step with tradition. Believing in clean lines and the inherent beauty of natural woods combined with natural stone and hand forged metals, they began their work and became a small part of the early 20th century American Arts and Crafts movement in their own right.

Like most successful persons working in America In the 19th and 20th cen. Working 120 + hour weeks and paying close attention to detail these men became successful Masters of their crafts and true American citizens. Simply by believing in the American promise, working hard, raising their families, doing a honest days work delivering true quality and value in a time when it would have been a disgrace to not have done so. H J Nick the grandson of Joseph carries on along with his family with the same work and business ethics as was instilled in him by his mother and his grandfather. Believing The American Dream Still Exist Today As Long As You Keep On This Corse.

Reviving A Centuries Old Tradition

Direct Descendant of The Marbella Brothers, Artist And Designer H. J. Nick Carries On This Family Tradition.

When H J Nick was a small child his mother the youngest daughter of 1st generation of the Marabella family born in America would tell him stories of his grandfather. Joseph Marabella a Italian immigrant that had left his country to escape the influences of something called the Black Hand in Sicily. The Black Hand at the time was threatening his family and their business. He his family and his brother arrived on American soil in the late 1800's. She would tell him stories of all the hardships their family would go through and how proud her father was to become a naturalized citizen of the United States of America.

She would tell him how he and his family all worked together some times more often than not sixteen hour days seven days a week doing any job they could get to exist and feed their families. He would listen to all of these stories with great admiration for his family and what it stood for and its achievements. His grand father was always working and investing in America and had taught his family to do the same. His success was always a combination of faith, hard work and delivering the best product that was possible to produce. He felt his good name was always worth more to him than a fast buck.

H J Nicks Father was also from a French immigrant family that fell on hard times as his mother would tell him. This story was in contrast to his Mothers family story of how his father was left on a church step with a note in a basket. Shortly after he was born in America because unfortuneantaly his mother had passed away at birth and his father could not care for him due to these hard times.

This transcended in his father working as a coal miner at the age of twelve years old. Only leaving the mine to do his duty in the US army during the second war. After the war she told of how they met. After the whirlwind engagement and marriage his father went back to work in the coal mines until his devastating debilitation caused by a shaft mine cave in accident.

His father was never afforded a formal education and signed his name with a X leaving very little options after this terrible accident for providing a income for his family since he physically could not work. However his X or a hand shake meant he had given his word. To him this meant he would rather literally die than break his word. Some how with just his integrity and strong will he was able to see to his families welfare and education.

The Common Denominator Between These Families Are Basic - Hard Work - Building A Honest Product - Delivering More Than You Paid For - And Standing Behind It Forever = The American Way - When It Was Expected That All Reputable Companies Stood Behind Their Work And Delivered True Value.
